Message On 28 March, my 300ZX blew its driver side turbo. To that end, I ordered some goodies. In tearing it down, though, I found that I can't just plug the new turbos in, as it had a dead cylinder (likely down on compression since '05, when the injector burned on that same hole).

Why it went down:

That's *all* oil from the DS turbo.

Towing it away from home to somewhere I can work on it (people steal shit when I work on it in my driveway), the trailer we had at hand was too low to get it on with the fascia attached.

This is, unfortunately, after letting about half a quart out of this pipe alone:

That's all the pics I have before I took it off to the machine shop. Plans for the rebuild are waiting on them to get back to me, but as of now include: forged pistons, wrist pins and rings, OEM bearings, original crank and rods, ARP main, rod, and head studs, and cometic MLS head gaskets.

The new stuff so far is just the turbo-related parts that I ordered (thinking I was just gonna pull the motor and swap turbos):
Z1 SMICs and 5-bolt downpipes

GT2560R turbos:

They're a lot bigger than the originals:

They'll be supported on the top end with a set of 740CC fuel injectors.

Stuff like this pisses me off - the head bolts were on in excess of 200 lb-ft of torque (whether as a result of a tech with the strength of an ape or simply 80,000 miles of heat cycles is an exercise for the reader). This happened (good thing it's a craftsman!):

Once at the machine shop, I had them hot tank everything (the valley underneath the intake manifold was filled with crap).

Picked up the pistons from the coater shop last week and dropped them off back with the machine shop. I had them dry film lube the skirts, and ceramic coat the tops.

I also ordered just about every replacement hose for reassembly (all in 4-ply silicone), a new clutch, a new radiator, and metal hardpipes for the boost hoses. Goodbye, $1500. Still need to pick up new exhaust manifold gaskets, oil pan gasket, intake manifold gasket, plenum gasket, and valve cover gaskets. Ugh.

Your powers are useless! I'm wearing my tinfoil underwear!
